Slurred speech, also known as 'Dysarthria'
The reason for slurred speech is often associated with stroke, head injury or other diseases of the nervous system that may affect the muscles of the lips, tongue, palate, larynx (voice box). It can also affect the muscles used for breathing. Damage to these muscles may cause difficulties speaking.
Dysarthria is not usually associated with loss of intellectual ability. The person with dysarthria is able to understand what others are saying to them and knows what they want to say, but their speech may be difficult for others to understand.
If you are experiencing difficulties with your speech and would like to discuss treatment options, please do get in touch.
